When ocean plastic pollution becomes an urgent environmental problem that needs to be solved globally, Ocean Boundary Plastic (OBP) certification is bringing changes to the industry through innovative models. It not only provides traceable and quantifiable solutions for plastic waste management, but also becomes the core competitiveness for enterprises to demonstrate social responsibility and seize the opportunity in the green market. Today, we will delve into the core values and practical paths of OBP certification.

01. What is OBP? Redefine the boundaries of 'recyclable plastics'
OBP refers to plastic waste that is not properly managed and has a high risk of flowing into the ocean within 50 kilometers of the coastline, including potential OBP (plastic in unregulated recycling areas within 50 kilometers), coastline OBP (plastic within 200 meters of intertidal zones and 100 meters of marine areas), waterway OBP (plastic within 200 meters of riverbanks and waterways), and fisheries related OBP (plastic in fishing gear and by-products).
OBP certification ensures that every batch of certification materials comes from high-risk areas of marine pollution through strict geographical delineation, supply chain control, and third-party audits, blocking the path of plastic entering the sea from the source. This feature gives OBP products a natural "environmental premium" and becomes an important label for brand differentiation competition.
02. Core standards for OBP certification
1. Collecting Organizational Standards (OBP-COL-STD): Standardize the collection process of OBP, requiring the collection area to comply with geographical boundaries, supporting two procurement models: independent collectors and supplier groups, and only allowing first level aggregation to ensure accurate traceability.

2. Recycling Organization Standard (OBP-REC-STD): Focusing on the treatment and conversion of OBP, the production process is required to have leak prevention control (wastewater and exhaust gas treatment meet standards), complete material flow records, and a clear and traceable proportion of certified OBP in the product.
3. Neutrality Service Provider Standard (OBP-NEU-STD): For non-commercial recyclable OBP, it is converted into OBP credit lines through recognized processing methods such as energy recovery and compliant disposal to achieve pollution offset.

4. Plastic Manufacturer and User Standard (OBP-PRO-STD): Enterprises are required to clarify the scope of neutralization products, offset their own plastic consumption through purchasing OBP credit limits, and complete weight checks every three months to ensure the authenticity and credibility of neutralization effects.
03. Three major supply chain control modes for OBP certification
1. Identity retention mode: Separate identification and processing throughout the process, with OBP purity of 100%;
2. Separation mode: Maintain OBP separation from other materials at all stages of production, traceable to the batch;
3. Quality balance mode: Allow certification OBP to be mixed with other materials for processing, but accurate certification ratios must be ensured through ledger accounting, with a maximum verification period of 3 months.
04. Social+OBP: Balancing Temperature and Responsibility for Environmental Protection
OBP certification not only focuses on environmental benefits, but also integrates social responsibility into the certification core through Social+optional components, helping vulnerable groups integrate into the formal economic system and achieve dual value of environment and society.

Enterprises choosing Social+OBP must meet the following requirements:
1. Establish IC community managers to safeguard the rights and interests of collectors;
2. Eliminate child labor and provide educational support and child care solutions for families of collectors in need;
3. Provide occupational health and safety protection, including PPE equipment, emergency supplies, and annual physical examinations;
4. Pay a premium of no less than 10% of the market price and support collectors in obtaining financial services and administrative assistance;
5. Conduct skill enhancement workshops every quarter, covering topics such as environmental knowledge, vocational skills, and rights protection.
05. OBP certification process
1. Clarify the scope of certification: Determine the products, production bases, and supply chain models involved in certification, and streamline the process nodes of collection, production, and processing.
2. Improve basic documents: Prepare and collect necessary materials such as latitude and longitude annotations, supplier qualification certificates, equipment operation logs, testing reports, material traceability ledgers, etc.
3. Select certification body: Submit an application through an officially recognized certification body (CB) of OBP to confirm the certification standards and fees.
4. Internal rectification and training: Conduct self-examination of key control points (refer to the OBP key control point checklist), and provide training to employees on OBP operating procedures, leak prevention and emergency response.
5. Third party audit and certificate acquisition: Cooperate with certification agencies to complete on-site audits (covering key nodes for multiple sites and supplier groups) and obtain scopecertificates.
ASCP is an approved OBP project certification body. Let's take responsibility as the sail and standards as the rudder, so that plastic no longer flows into the ocean and commercial value and environmental value can be pursued in both directions!
