2027 BCI Major Guidelines Launched | Mandatory Self-Check for the Entire Chain | Direct Impact on Certification/Account if Overdue
Attention bosses, supply chain managers, and compliance partners engaged in BCI Better Cotton! The BCI Chain of Custody (CoC) Self-Assessment Guide v1.0 has officially taken effect.Whether you are certified or not, whether you are a factory or a brand, you must conduct an annual self-check!
Don’t panic! This article explains in the most straightforward language: who needs to do it, how to do it, when to do it, and what happens if you do it wrong — you can get started rightafter reading!
First, Understand in One Sentence: What Exactly is BCI CoC Self-Assessment?
Simply put, it’s a "compliance check-up form" issued by BCI to the entire supply chain. Every year, you check yourself: from cottonentering the factory to shipment, whether the processes are chaotic, whether records are missing, and whether there are loopholes in management.
Its purpose is not to "find faults", but to treat problems in advance, avoid mistakes, and keep your BCI cotton qualification!
The scope of application is extremely wide:
Cotton gins, spinning mills, weaving factories, printing and dyeing factories, garment factories, brands, retailers... As long as you touch BCI cotton, no one can escape!
Multi-site companies? Each factory and each site must conduct an independent check-up, and the headquarters shall supervise uniformly!
Countdown Started! You Will Lose if You Step on These Time Bombs
BCI has drawn a red line — you will really "get hurt" if you miss it
Transition Period Deadline: 28 February 2027
• If you initiate the first certification audit before this date → No need to conduct self-assessment in advance
• Enterprises already engaged in BCI cotton business → Must complete it within 12 months after the document is released
Certified Enterprises: Complete within 3~12 months after certification
• It is recommended to finish it within 9 months to leave enough time to correct problems
• Failed the first audit? Calculate the anniversary based on the final certification date
Uncertified Enterprises Using BCP Platform
• Existing users: Complete the full set and rectification within 12 months
• New users: Complete within 12 months after opening the BCP account
• In the future, the anniversary date will be calculated based on the completion date every year
Three Roles, Tasks at a Glance!
Certified Suppliers: Self-Assessment = Protect Your Qualification
Fill in the official BCI template, once a year — don’t be lazy!
• Led by the management representative, or authorized to a reliable colleague (must be independent, cannot check their own work)
• Only check the content within your own certification scope; subcontractor factories can be inspected remotely
• Found problems? Must be corrected within 90 days
• Multi-factory: The 90-day rectification period starts after the last factory completes the check
• No impact on certification if corrected on time! Taking the initiative to expose problems ≠ being punished
Key Point: Submit to the certification body within 12 months after completion and include it in the annual management review!
Certification Bodies: Be a Good "Supervisor"
You are the gatekeeper of enterprise compliance, and your responsibilities are clear:
• Establish an account ledger, keep an eye on the deadline of each customer, and remind them if possible
• Remotely verify the completeness of the report, no on-site audit required
• Overdue, unfinished, or unrectified → Issue non-conformity directly
• Refuse to rectify? Certificate suspended for at least 3 months
• Must upload to the INTACT platform within 30 days after receiving the complete report
• Customer transfers to another institution? Self-assessment records must be handed over clearly
Uncertified BCP Users: Not Doing It = Account Suspension
Don’t think you don’t need to do it if you’re not certified! BCI is watching closely:
• Also once a year, using the official template
• Problems must be rectified within 90 days, no impact on platform usage
• BCI may conduct random inspections at any time; if you fail to submit the report within 7 days of being requested → BCP account will be frozen directly
• Incomplete submission? Supplement within 7 working days, otherwise it will be frozen as well
This is not a threat — the "admission ticket" for BCI cotton business is in your own hands!
5 Most Common Pitfalls — Avoiding Them is Winning
1. Only one form for multi-site → Wrong! Each site must do it separately
2. Purchasing staff checks their own purchasing link → Wrong! Must be independently audited
3. 90-day period starts from the first day of filling in the form → Wrong! Starts from the day of full completion
4. Uncertified enterprises don’t need to do it → Big mistake! BCP account will be frozen
5. Certification body forgets to upload → Non-compliant! Must upload to INTACT within 30 days
Super Simple Table to Remember All Key Points

A Sincere Reminder at the End
BCI CoC self-assessment is not a burden, but a protective umbrella. Taking the initiative to conduct a check-up and rectify problems in advance can help you avoid troubles such as audit failures, certificate suspension, and account freezing.
